Sex Sells

I opened up a new blog today on Wordpress. The topic is "adult" in nature, and the title of the blog uses a word that would be recognized as having adult connotations.

Within about four hours, I had over eighty hits.

I don't think this blog has eighty hits total in over three years.

I knew sex sells, but I didn't really realize it sold like that.

Think

Lindsay wrote a really nice piece about Dateline NBC and "Perverted Justice"'s ongoing series where they went into chat rooms, pretending to be adolescent girls and boys and arranged for the men who hit on them for sex to meet them at a home, then confronted these men on tape.

I won't go into the point about being a responsible parent. Lindsay covers that part well. What provoked me to write in this long neglected blog after reading her post was something that is empirical to the topic.

And that is, why don't people THINK?

It seems to be that more and more, people are turning off their brains. It is almost like there is a conscience effort to run away from anything that can't be covered in a superficial three second statement. Discourse and debate is limited to "I'm on this side, and the other side is not only wrong, but evil". No real discussion, no real planning, no thought.

I don't really like this. Gut feeling is that in this day and age, if we really want a better world, a better life not just for ourselves, but for everyone, the thing we need is quite a bit of thought and debate. Yes, there are a lot of topics that are complex, global warming, "free" vs. "fair" trade, civil liberties vs. "security". None of these are "easy" things to come to grips with. Never mind our day to day responsibilities around "am I doing right for my children", "am I doing what is best for myself and my family", "am I making the right choices for my life?".

Sometimes I wonder if there is this little voice shouting with all its might in back of so many heads "THINK". But because it is so scary, every one runs around doing all they can to drown that voice out.
